When building a website, there are a lot of decisions to make, and sometimes it can feel a bit overwhelming. With themes, fonts, colors, plugins, domain names and more, it can be difficult to know where to start.
Here are 3 of the most important things to consider when designing your site.
It needs to be responsive
A responsive site is critical. It needs to load quickly, scroll smoothly, and not give users errors. It also needs to be adaptive to the various screens users may view it on. Phones, tablets, and computer screens are all different, and if your site doesn't adapt well, users will need to scroll side to side in order to view the entire page. This is annoying and difficult and often drives users away. Make sure the choices you make will give users a clean, crisp, responsive and adaptive site that looks great on any screen they use.
Make smart color choices
Did you know that color is 85% of the reason people will purchase a product? Consider the purpose of your website and the user. If you're selling children's toys, bright colors are much more appropriate than black or gray. But if you're writing a blog about grief or selling wedding dresses, a black, gray or white might be more appropriate. Also consider that bright colors can be harder on the eyes for some people. Once you've chosen your dominant color, use a color wheel to choose complementary and contrasting colors that will enhance the site, rather than randomly choosing colors that may or may not clash and create a hard to view, and therefore hard to enjoy, website experience.
Be choosy when it comes to font
There are so many font choices, and many of them are very pretty, but not all that functional. You need to select a font that is attractive but also easy to read. It needs to be easy to read at varying sizes, so you can use the same font throughout the site, regardless of whether it's a page title, heading, or the body of your content. Sticking with only one, or at most two or three, will give your site consistency. It's also important to make sure that your font is one that will load across all browsers and on all devices.
Your site can be unique and beautiful. Have fun with it.
